Why Women shouldn’t be afraid to lift heavier
A question that often comes up in classes is: “Should I increase the weight yet?”
For many women, lifting heavier weights can feel intimidating. There’s often a long-standing belief that heavier strength training will lead to becoming bulky.
In reality, women’s bodies don’t build muscle in the same way men’s bodies do due to hormonal differences. Instead, lifting heavier weights typically leads to:
• improved strength
• better muscle tone
• increased bone density
• better metabolism
• greater confidence in what your body can do
One of the key principles in strength training is something called progressive overload. This simply means gradually increasing the challenge placed on your muscles over time. Your body adapts quickly. If we always use the same weight or the same level of resistance, the muscles eventually stop being challenged.
Increasing weights - even slightly, helps the body continue to build strength. This doesn’t mean every workout needs to feel exhausting. It simply means allowing your body to progress and get stronger over time.
Something to try this week:
If an exercise starts to feel comfortable, it might be a sign your body is ready for a little more challenge. If you’re unsure when to progress weights safely, that’s something I often guide clients through in sessions.
