How Pilates can improve posture and reduce back pain

Many of us spend a large part of the day sitting,  whether it’s working at a desk, driving, or using our phones. Over time, this can lead to common issues such as rounded shoulders, tight hips, and tension in the neck or lower back. This is where Pilates can be incredibly helpful.

Pilates focuses on strengthening the deep stabilising muscles of the body, particularly the core. These muscles support the spine and help improve overall alignment.

When these muscles become stronger, they can help:

• support better posture
• reduce strain on the lower back
• improve spinal mobility
• reduce tension in the neck and shoulders

Pilates also encourages more awareness of how we move throughout the day. Often small adjustments in posture and movement patterns can make a noticeable difference. While Pilates isn’t a cure-all for pain, it can be a valuable tool for helping the body move in a more balanced and supported way.

If you are in discomfort or have been to the doctors and currently waiting in a long list to be seen by someone else, why not get yourself booked in with me for a full body assessment and let me show you how simple it really is to do some stretches and work around your pain. It can be something as simple as strengthening or opening up another area of your body to relieve the pain.

Something to try this week:
Take a moment to check in with your posture during the day, especially if you’ve been sitting for long periods. If you’d like help improving posture and core strength, that’s something we often focus on during Pilates sessions.
